The questions we ask and issues we talk about with our clients stem from our own experiences. We know first-hand how important it is to secure our futures and we want to ensure more people are able to do so. Gordon and Dani (father and daughter team) learnt the hard way about how important it is to plan ahead.
Why Wellingborough Wills was created
We are a family business which helps other families to prepare for the certainty of death but the uncertainty of life.
We all know that the time will come when we will no longer be here, and for many of us that is a reality we don’t want to face. Consequently, this results in us not talking about the future, what we want to happen, what we want to avoid happening, and how we can protect ourselves and those that we love.
There’s still a taboo surrounding death, and it’s something that many of us still can’t face talking about – does this sound familiar? It was the same in Gordon and Dani’s family too! Until the worst happened – Dani’s Nan Elsie (Gordon’s Mother-In-Law) had a serious stroke, which left her paralysed down one side and had an impact on her short term memory.
It came as a shock to the whole family – mostly Elsie’s husband Roy, who then started to panic about the future – what would happen to them if one of them died or went into care? Would they lose their home to pay for care? There were so many questions.
At the time Gordon was a mortgage broker, so Roy asked Gordon to find some answers, and Gordon discovered Estate Planning. Essentially – writing a will, specifying your wishes and making sure that everything that you worked hard to achieve gets to be passed on to future generations. Also, Lasting Powers of Attorney – giving the people you love the authority to carry out decisions on your behalf when you are no longer able to yourself. Unfortunately it was too late for Elsie to make any of these plans.
Gordon realised if they didn’t know about any of this – then neither did a lot of other families, and he didn’t want others to be faced with the same situation. So he retrained as an Estate Planner and in 2008 Wellingborough Wills was born.
In 2014, Dani chose to leave a 12 year career in childcare, and join the family business on a temporary basis. That soon turned permanent when she too fell in love with the solutions estate planning provides to families. This love resulted from seeing the looks of relief, the visible sigh’s from clients who had finally lifted a huge weight off their minds, and the beaming smiles when they show people just what they can achieve and protect against with estate planning.
Thankfully, they get to help so many families to avoid the situation they found themselves in. They speak from the heart to their clients and share their own personal experiences with them too, and because they know how difficult people can find it – they make sure to always provide a bit of laughter along the way. Planning for the future is a serious subject, but it doesn’t have to be morbid or all doom and gloom. After all, what Wellingborough Wills do isn’t really about dying – it’s about living, and providing a future for those you love.
Wellingborough Wills are a fantastic family run business they made making are wills very straightforward. We have 3 young children so it was important to put guardians in place should the worst happen. We found them very accommodating doing the meetings around are very busy family life.
