Reasons To Write A Will
Writing a Will is something that most people think about, but only a few people actually get around to doing. Apart from the usual “I’ll get around to it” there seems to be a lot of confusion about who can write a Will, and the reasons to write a will.
Who can write a Will?
The short answer is ANYONE over the age of 18 can write a Will – over 16 if you are in the armed forces and have received a posting to an operational area.
Who should write a will?
Everybody should write a will, but there specific groups of people who have more pressing reasons to write a will.
Anyone who has a child, whether you are a married couple, single parent, adoptive parent or same-sex parents you need to write a will to appoint guardians for your child/children.
If you own a property you need write a will, there are various different options for making your property a will-able asset, and therefore leave it to someone you want to receive it.
Leave your business in the safe hands of someone you trust, to ensure your family continues to benefit from all your hard work.
If you are one of those who actually did get around to it did you know that getting married invalidates your will? Leaving it in the hands of the courts to distribute your assets.
Without a will, unmarried couples will not inherit anything from their partners estate.
Being separated doesn’t invalidate your will – your estranged partner will inherit everything!
If you already have a Will then divorce does not invalidate it! So without updating it your Ex may still inherit from your estate.
Why Don’t People Do It?
Many people believe that either they don’t have anything to leave, they are too young, or that the people they want to inherit their estate will just automatically get it. The truth is that everyone has something, you can never be too young (unless under 18) and the only way the people you want to inherit is if you write a Will, otherwise the government decides.
